Texas Marijuana Decriminalization

Recently covered by an article in the Texas Tribune, there’s a possibility of reducing penalties for possessing small amounts of marijuana! The chances of passing this bill into law are still slim, but it just recently got approved in the house and is now moving to the Senate. This bill has changed from a decriminalization measure to one that reduces penalties for possession. There has been a lot of negotiation over time for this bill, for a couple of different reasons. One reason being that Lt. Governor Dan Patrick has spoken very openly about not changing Texas’ marijuana laws, but generally, people want at least something to change with marijuana in Texas.
This bill could possibly be life-changing for Texas, as it’d be the first step in real change. This bill would change the possible penalties for being caught with one ounce or less, and it would change it from being a Class B misdemeanor to a Class C which is similar to a parking ticket. This bill would also make judges automatically put offenders on deferred adjudication probation, make sure Texans can’t get their license suspended for marijuana charges, and ensures that their record can be expunged if convicted. In Texas marijuana is illegal. Some district attorney’s in large counties have already decided to not prosecute certain offenders, but if this bill were to pass it would change the entire state of Texas.
I think this bill is important for many reasons, but I think it’s extremely important for Texas to make a change. The federal legalization of hemp has changed Texas drastically, but if this bill were to pass I think it could help start the cannabis tidal wave.
